* A whirlwind smash with the hammer that clears a sizable radius around the Chieftain. He prepares for the attack by lifting his leg as he winds up.

* An overhead smash with the hammer which can inflict the Muscle Damage status effect (which debuffs Strength for as long as it's active) but takes a little longer for the Chieftain to recover from than the whirlwind smash. He prepares for the attack by spreading his legs out as he winds up.

* A vicious kick which is mainly used when the Chieftain is recovering from being stunned and a player is directly in front of him. It's the only attack that he has which is not a smash, and can be blocked by Fiona; everyone else should avoid it.

*The Gnoll Chieftain is the very first boss you will face that makes extensive use of smash attacks. Learning how to read the boss's behavior so you can know which attack is coming and avoid it (see Skills and Attacks above) is absolutely essential to surviving the battle.

*Successfully hitting his helmet with spears or heavy objects twice will break off his helmet, and after the battle you will receive Crimson Rage Helm. It's easiest to do this towards the end of the battle, as his 'fatigued' phase leaves him very vulnerable. However, it also seems to decrease his stamina, and thus meaning that if his helmet is knocked off early it will make the rest of the battle much easier since he will need to recover from fatigue almost 3 times more than usual.

*His kicks are normal attacks but any hammer attack is a smash attack. Therefore, Fiona cannot Guard his hammer moves unless she uses Heavy Stander to do so.

*Before engaging the Chieftain, it is strongly recommended to let him kill his underlings; simply lure the Chieftain to the other Gnolls and as he attacks, they will get hit and most likely die. Don't forget to dodge the attack!

*NEVER combo attack him unless you get a very good opening. The Chieftain can hit around 1/3rd to 2/3rds your maximum health at low levels, which is a very serious threat. The safest way to deal with him is to use a "Hit and Run" tactic; hit him a few times and then dodge and run away, then repeat.

*Circling around the Chieftain is a surefire way to avoid all of his attacks. The attack you want is when he spreads his legs out then smashes the hammer down in front of him. If you've been running around him you can start your combo (continuing to run towards his back) as the hammer is coming down. This should put you on his backside for a short combo.

*A very good method to defeat him is to have one party member continually pull him to the ground with a Chain Hook secondary weapon, which makes him helpless and stops his attacks while the other party members unload their highest DPS combos on him. Fionas who have not yet trained Heavy Stander should always equip Chain Hooks for this battle because they cannot dodge fast enough to contribute much direct damage unless he is grappled and helpless on the ground.

*When soloing with Lann or Fiona, the best option is to stun him by using spears or by throwing pieces of destroyed column.

*Evie should generally try to hit him with rocks, but should only use the large ones as the small ones may not stun him. If you tilt the camera angle up so that the camera is at about ground level, there is a much higher chance of damaging the helmet. If you take 2 hits from the chieftain's hammer attacks, your magic shield will fail, if this happens run away and avoid any risk of a third hit as it will kill or almost kill an unprotected Evie and there is no way to manually replace the shield besides simply waiting

|notes=

*The Gnoll Chieftain is the leader of a rebellion faction of Gnolls who wanted to live in peace, and not side with Fomorians.

*The Gnoll Chieftain was considered one of the two 'right-hand men' of the Gnoll King Warchief Black Scar, the other being Rampage.
